Record December at Birmingham Airport
Birmingham International Airport has a record number of passengers for December 2007. During the month the airport handled a record 587,760 passengers which marked a 2.3% increase on the same month in 2006 and the highest number of passengers ever to travel through the hub in December.
2007 proved to be a very successful year for the regional airport. A total of 9,232,496 passengers used the airport, a 0.9% increase on 2006. During the year, scheduled passengers made up 73% of the total figure with the remaining being charter passengers.
Stating that the airport was pleased with the end-of-year performance, Acting Managing Director Joe Kelly also said: "We've welcomed new Airlines and introduced new destinations for our Region's leisure and business travellers, and have opened our new extended Terminal 1 departures lounge significantly increasing facilities for the comfort and experience of our passengers."
The future for Birmingham International Airport looks set to bring in higher passenger numbers. A planning application for a runway extension to accommodate long-haul flights has been submitted and replacing the International Pier is high on the airport's agenda.
