Network Rail will be sliding a new bridge into position under one of the main access roads to Manchester Airport as part of a £15 million scheme to create an extra platform at the airport's station. Accordingly the road, Outwood Lane, will be closed from 22:00 on Friday 15 February until early morning on Monday 3rd march 2008.
To accommodate the new platform, Network Rail will be digging across under Outwood Lane to slide a new supporting bridge into place, the equivalent weight of ten jumbo jets. As Outwood Lane is the main road to Terminals 1 and 3 a well signed diversion will be put in place for anyone travelling by car to the terminals.
Vehicles will continue to be directed off the M56 at Junction 5 but traffic for Terminal 1 will be diverted via Terminal 2 past the Station with Terminal 3 traffic diverted up Ringway Road West then onto Ringway Road past Premier Park and the Airport Hotel.
Passengers driving to Manchester Airport are advised to allow extra time for their journey. Capacity Planning Manager at Manchester Airport, Bob Longworth stated: "It is impossible to predict how much longer road users should allow but we don't expect major disruption. However, the morning and evening peak periods are always busy so we are advising people to leave a little extra time for the trip." Mr Longworth went on to state that "only a minority are likely to be affected by the closure of Outwood Lane."
The new, third, rail platform at the Station will mean vast improvements for passengers starting or ending their journey by rail with greater capacity, reliability and punctuality for train services to and from Manchester Airport.
